Doctoral candidate (PhD-Student) in Civil Engineering (M/F)

The University of Luxembourg is a multilingual, international research University.

The University of Luxembourg is looking for its Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication (FSTC) for a

Doctoral candidate (PhD-Student) in Civil Engineering (M/F)

Project

Eco-Construction for Sustainable Development (ECON4SD)

Sub-project

Development of new structural composite flooring systems
based on steel and concrete

  • Ref : R-AGR-3265-10-C
  • Fixed-term 14 months initial contract, extendable up to 45 months in total
  • Full-time (40 hours/week)
  • Starting 1st October 2017
  • Student AND Employee status

The successful applicant will work on the EU funded project Eco-Construction for Sustainable Development (ECON4SD) as part of a group consisting of six doctoral students and one Postdoc that are all involved in this project. A professor of the FSTC will supervise the advancement of the doctoral studies. The doctoral student will be a member of the Doctoral School for Science and Engineering (DSSE) offering a doctoral Program in Civil Engineering Sciences that aims to provide interdisciplinary and internationally competitive research training.

Your role

Analysis and development of design models for modular, flexible, re-usable, structural floor systems consisting of composite beams in steel and concrete as well as precast concrete slab elements.

Description

Owing to the increasing demand for high flexibility, re-usability, and resource efficient construction, the research of this work-package aims at developing modular and dismountable structural elements. Thus, new types of prefabricated hybrid components in steel – concrete will be explored with the objective of realizing slim and resource efficient components for slabs in buildings.

For this purpose re-usable, modular, pre-fabricated standard elements out of which various construction components can be assembled will be developed. Destruction-free dis- and re-assembly of such modular components allows responding to changing structural demands, revitalisation or removal. The material use and constructability will be evaluated by analysing key principles covering aspects such as prefabrication, simplification, optimisation, reducing complexity, reuse, and adaptability. All these key principles will be applied to develop structural elements that require less maintenance and repair efforts. Thus, the whole service-life of the structural elements will be considered. Newly optimized design concepts for all structural elements including their connections will be elaborated by numerical, analytical and experimental analysis. We will conduct scientific, experimental and numerically based investigations on composite slab systems as well as connections between slab elements and beams. New design rules will have to be derived for the practical engineer. Engineering models to describe the new occurring failure modes will be developed on the basis of the conducted tests, numerical simulations and probabilistic investigations.
