The Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in business administration and economics. The PhD scholarship will be partly financed by Landdistriktspuljen and SUC Fonden. The position is located at the campus in Esbjerg and should be filled starting on Febuary 1st, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description

Research in the Department is organized in three research groups, and the announced position will be part of the Research Group “Markets, Organization, and Behavior” and associated with the Danish Centre for Rural Research (CLF). The research approach of the research group is based on theoretically founded empirical analyses of the economic behavior of individuals, groups (e.g. households), or business enterprises. The research group has a particular interest in some specific markets and industries and their specific characteristics. These include energy, sports, media, event, tourism, and retailing markets.

For this position, we welcome applicants with a Master degree in Business Economics, Business Administration, Marketing, Economics, or a related field and a research interest in the following fields:

  • Branding, in particular related to places and regions
  • Stakeholder networks
  • Value Co-Creation
  • Tourism and Destination Marketing

The candidate should have a background in marketing and/or management, branding, and/or tourism. Experiences in applying empirical methods (qualitative and/or quantitative) will be advantageous. It is expected that the PhD will address the area of rural place branding, preferably with a focus on South-West Jutland. The candidate is expected to collaborate with local enterprises, administration, and non-profit organizations as well as with local and international researchers. Thus, proficiency in English both in writing and speaking is required. Furthermore, proficiency in Danish both in writing and speaking would be welcome but is not mandatory.

The Department

The Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics is part of the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, is located in Esbjerg, and employs some 50 members of staff. The Department emphasizes sociology, business economics, and environmental and resource economics. It conducts research in the following areas organized as research groups: (i) Markets, Organization & Behavior, (ii) Environmental and Resource Economics and (iii) Rural and Cultural Sociology. The Department provides teaching for degrees in General Business Economics (B.Sc.), Marketing and Innovation (M.Sc.), Sport and Event Management (B.Sc. and M.Sc.), Energy Management (B.Sc.), Environmental and Resource Management (M.Sc.), Sociology and Cultural Analysis (B.Sc and M.Sc.), and diploma and MBA programs in business.

Your employment as a Salaried PhD Research Fellow is governed by the agreement of October 1, 2008 on Graduate Employees in government appendix 5 – protocol on PhD Research Fellows. The scholarship runs for three years.

  • A project description (max 5 pages of 2400 characters each, including spaces, notes, appendices, bibliography etc.)
  • An abstract for the above project description of no more than 250 words
